A space that encourages a sense of ‘slow’ and connection. That is Coota, the lovingly revived 1960′s beach house of Rhiannon and Matt Orr, founders of Design Orr Build. Despite its original near uninhabitable state, Rhiannon and Matt saw potential in the bones of the beach home in Capel Sound, on the Mornington Peninsula.

Their call? An extensive renovation as a family home and eventual accommodation. With large windows framing the outdoors and beautiful timber louvres on the facade that operate like a tent, inviting sea breeze into the home.

The property consists of the main house with 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, laundry, kitchen, dining and living. Through rear yard access there is a studio extension comprising of 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Set amongst coastal indigenous landscaping, the yard also offers an outdoor shower for the sandy beach returns, large entertaining deck with outdoor dining setting under a tree canopy and a small deck with two rocking chairs.

Isern Serra transformed the ground floor of a Barcelona building into a creative workspace for Ezequiel Pini and his visualisation Studio Six N. Five. The multifunctional studio operates as an office space and showroom where monochromatic and earth-toned colours are maximising the flow of natural light.

Six N. Five – known for its experimental approach and innovative work- creates digital images, films, and objects. The revitalized office doubles as a public gallery for exhibitions and events, reflecting the team’s creative ethos. Each of the private spaces connects to a large terrace, a green-lined place for employees to relax and recharge.

A North London townhouse required some clever spatial planning to reclaim lost space. The result? Canyon House, a bright, open and textural 1970’s California-inspired home.

The house was stripped back to make way for a new open floor plan featuring a bespoke elm kitchen and a custom-made, modular raised conversation platform with velvet seating. Upstairs, two bedrooms enjoy outdoor views to the surrounding nature through large new windows. A professional recording studio occupies the lower ground floor, acoustically tuned, and isolated from the rest of the house and neighbours.

Without frills architect Piet Götzen has designed a four-star hotel with cinematic allures. Where timeless elegance and functionality prevail. The family hotel was initially built for Belgian and Dutch hotel guests who opted for a long-term stay, as they rented an apartment with sea view during the summer of stayed there for months. Today the hotel focuses on short-term stays and surprises modern travelers and classic adventurers with spacious suites, furnished with high end vintage furniture and authentic materials. Verner Panton, Le Corbusier, Eames, Sputnik lamps by Kaiser Leuchten… they all have their home here. Subtly mixed in an interior with soft dune shades. Which room to stay?  One with an endless sea view, a room overlooking the small town of Breskens and its surrounding nature or a luxurious view to both of them. Including a dynamic and fascinating play between the sea and passing boats.

Biarritz – Where a museum is dedicated to the ocean. And the design is based on the dual concept of being under the sky and the sea. Exploring both explores both surf and sea and their role upon our leisure, science and ecology.

The precise integration of concept and topography gives the building a unique profile. Towards the ocean, the concave form of the building plaza is extended through the landscape. With slightly cupped edges, the landscape -a mixture of field and local vegetation- is a continuation of the building and will host festivals and daily events that are integrated with the museum facilities

Sculpture in the jungle. Casa Bautista, a secluded beachfront villa designed by by Mexican architecture studio Productora. Set your travel destination towards Sian Ka’an, Tulum’s Unesco Heritage protected jungle. Promising to be an ultimate experience.

Casa Bautista is a combination of surrealist and brutalist inspirations. Where the architect’s work is distinguished by an interest in precise geometries, the production of legible projects and by the search for timeless buildings through their material and spatial resolutions. Each of the five guest rooms are designed with privacy and nature in mind.To connect with nature, without a sense of a barrier. Where you catch the sound of the ocean mixing with the tropical birds. A space to find serenity.

Because of its protected location in the reserve, planning restrictions determined the villa could only be 300 sq m and as tall as the tree canopy. Maximising this 8-metre height is a colossal concrete staircase, which corkscrews through the centre of the holiday home, connecting its three levels..

Ludwig Godefroy’s brutalist Casa Mérida in Mexico. Concealed concrete courtyards and cool garden rooms make for a contemplative hideaway. Most of the building seems to be open to the outdoors, with few fully enclosed spaces. The project’s defining feature, though, is that it is 80m long but just 8m wide.

Mérida is a mix between contemporary city and Mayan and colonial history. Architects like Augusto Quijano have placed Mérida in an important place in the country in terms of contemporary architecture. French-born, Mexico City-based architect Ludwig Godefroy has designed a house that blends perfectly with the architectural movement. Mérida House is raw and omnipresent concrete, with all hard edges and rough surfaces under the strong Mexican sun

“This is not a house with a garden. It is a garden with a house,” explains the architect. Making the most of the region’s warm weather and taking his cues from the outdoor lifestyle of the locals, Godefroy composed a journey through a sequence of permeable spaces along the plot’s long axis, dotted with four courtyards.

Kennedy Nolan architects restored and re-imagined an existing Melbourne house. Adding a marvellous pavilion which is separated from the original building by an internal and stylish courtyard containing a swimming pool to blink your eyes more than once.  This rather conventional approach is enlivened by displacing expectations of the backyard extension.  They have embraced a balanced relationship between garden and interior space and a detailed and nuanced approach to texture, colour and pattern.

Swapping the rectilinear geometry of the existing house with an architectural language of curves and circles, a sweeping façade of white painted brickwork wraps around a new pond-cum-swimming pool to create an intimate courtyard linking the renovated house at the front of the property with the new pavilion in the back.

A beach house that uses the landscape to influence the design, rather than trying to impose a design upon the landscape. That is Castle Rock Beach House, designed by Herbst Architects.

Every house has its surroundings, its features. Both a crescent shaped beach and a craggy mountain peak are to be seen from the site  here. The beach house is split into two pavilions. A living pavilion on the crest and a bedroom pavilion a floor below running parallel to the slope. The living pavilion has two decks to allow the occupant to track the sun and find shelter from the wind.

The upper and lower pavilions are stitched together by a staircase that t-junctions with the bedroom wing. A gabion wall retains the hillside and runs the length of a semi external passage which provides access to bathrooms and bedrooms. The bathrooms have a semi outdoor shower as the only means of bathing.

Located between old olive trees and surrounded by the gentle white trulli. Masseria Mozzone, at the foot of the valle d’Itria and with a wonderful view close to Ostuni and Fasano. A very rustic and authentic Puglian experience, where all food is prepared on site with a whole lot of love. And where slow life is encouraged!

The ancient Masseria Mozzone has been renovated taking care of every detail, keeping the original structural shapes and using typical materials, such as stone and white wood. The rooms are traditional trulli style structures, decorated with a simple minimalist style: bright open spaces characterized by white colour in a familiar and discern setting.

A place where you feel at home. Where you drop your limits and settle down to unwind and enjoy the charming countryside. Breathing nature and walking around. Culinary boundaries are as wide as the tradition of Italian cooking. The owners of the masseria produce their own bespoke olive oil straight from the trees on the property. Madre Madonna!

Casa Altanera by Venezuelan Architect Alberto Calleja combines brutalism and traditional Mexican craftmanship. The house is designed to interact with the exterior through various terraces, large openings and ares in the palapa – an open-sided construction at the edge of the lot, topped with a thatched roof of dried palm leaves and finished with an outdoor pool.

The open-sided construction is an encounter with nature, blending a refined modern aesthetic with a raw, unadulterated approach to design. The residence is about 380m2 and contains three separate operating modules. An exterior wooden pathway connects the three volumes, featuring a strong connection with nature through sophisticated yet simple design principles, where the land and sea become part of a dynamic relationship.

Oslo-based architect Knut Hjeltnes unveils a home-away-from-home, located on its own Island.  Titled Sildholmen, located off the coast of Remøya in Norway, this private house sits atop a rock foundation which takes up residence to replace a warehouse that was washed away during a storm in the early 1990s.

Due to planning restrictions, a building was allowed only if it shared the same proportions. Constructed off-site, the structure of the home consists of seven steel frames, and four internal volumes, all clad in wood. When not in use, the building closes off from the world entirely. Sliding shutters can be retracted to protect all windows and doors, rendering the home resistant to the kind of weather that destroyed its forebear.

Wooden shutters wrap around this downtown Miami home, which looks onto the surrounding palm trees. Architects Melissa and Jacob Brillhart set out to design their Brillhart house, inspired by Florida’s modernism and the dogtrot model to create a tropical oasis in the city. The couple designed and built most of the home themselves.

What you see? A striking interplay of sharp glass and soft wood shutters, creating a simple and practical building that’s rich in cultural heritage. The home takes inspiration from many native building styles, including postwar tropical modernism, glass pavilion typology, and Florida cracker architecture. The dense ipe wood that clads the exterior and columns was chosen to withstand potential termite attacks and the damp tropical climate.

The small, simple, and practical building is both modest and rich in cultural meaning. It attempts to maximize efficiency, space, and energy.

Cabo Verde. Charming with an archipelago that stands out for its unique moon landscape with craters, bumps and rocks as far as the eye can see. Where respect for the surrounding landscape is essential. Embraced by both Belgian Polo Architects and Going East.

Together they have created the Cabo Verde Barefoot Luxury Villas. A series of 12 serviced ethnic chic dwellings. Inspired by the birth island of great singer Cesaria Evora, the people and local craftmanship, the energy of the island and the natural environment. have paired cobbled stone walls with neutral interiors to camouflage this cluster of guest villas against Cape Verde’s rocky terrain. Matching its immediate surroundings. “It charms with beautiful shades of brown, ochre, red – and contrasts dramatically with the deep blue Atlantic ocean. Respect for the surrounding landscape was essential.”

The design team were collectively mindful of the island’s natural characteristics, thereby making decisions for the architecture, interiors and landscaping that are respectful of the arid, rocky terrain. A maximum of four storeys high, the villas are constructed with a raw concrete framework and then clad with stacked basalt stones dug directly from the surrounding valley. As well as being aligned with the traditional Cabo Verdean method of building walls, the rustic ochre and brown tones of the stone work in harmony with the colours of the land.

Located on the wild Atlantic coastline of Eleuthera and perched on a cliff overlooking a private beach, this hideaway cabin in the Bahama’s is designed for owners Mark and Kate Ingraham. The Thatch House is both an eco-resort and surf camp. Inspired by the experimental Hatch House (Jack Hall, 1960) on Cape Cod’s Natural Sea Shore, the project is a combination of volumes and outdoor decks that dissolve within the landscape.

Raised a few feet off the ground, the building is constructed of western red cedar and thatch, with a tongue and groove cedar paneled interior. A beautiful long porch is connecting the two spaces. It runs along the south side of the building and a central, covered outdoor sitting area. This small court acts as the formal entry into both spaces and also allows one to enjoy the weather while still being protected from the wind and spray coming off the ocean. For a more dramatic outdoor experience, a feature stair was designed to lead up to a roof terrace offering unobstructed 360 degree views.

Operable flaps and shutters are used along the porch and in front of all the window openings. Designed for multiple uses, the shutters provide shade and control breezes while also adding security while the retreat is unoccupied.

Casa Morgana, a hidden gem settled in a lush garden in Northern Germany. Although you might consider it somewhere else, as the surrounding nature simulates quite a subtropical oasis. A minimalist architectural project, designed by Berlin-based architecture studio J. Mayer H.

The house shows off as a private residence with brutalist “box in box” concrete volumes. While distinct from the outside, the boxes connect together to create an interior of multi-levelled spaces in the three-story home, divided either by mirrored walls, curtains or thick terrazzo wall sections. “Mirrored walls reflect the exposed concrete,” said the studio. “The terrazzo installations appear like cuts through the concrete walls and expose the inner structure of the material.”

Instead of creating a rough make-over, the architects built this house as a new location that distills and continues the archaic and brutalist aesthetic from the time of the building’s original emergence. They have cut away at some parts and extended others with new, smooth concrete elements to make what the architecture studio calls a “residential sculpture”.

At the backside of the house, large glass pivoting doors open the entire living area into the juicy green garden: an oasis of bamboo, tree trunks, palms and mushrooms. All designed by artist and landscape architect Tita Giese.

In a mountainous village nearby Southern China’s Jingdezhen, AZL Architects have designed a porcelain production site that revitalises an ancient craft. At its core is an egg-shaped wood kiln, built with age-old, regional know-how only four or five people today have.

The BingDing Wood Kiln reflects a deep respect for local context, masterfully displaying how to attract new eyes – and profit – to an industry that’s as much a part of the region as the land itself. The site is surrounded by mountains and bamboo forests in a tranquil environment.

The name wood kiln comes from the local preference for using the reddish timber from Horsetail pines for fuel. But modern industrial technologies, environmental protection requirements and new ways of firing the pottery have greatly impacted the industry and left the technique vulnerable to extinction.

At its core is an egg-shaped wood kiln, built with age-old, regional know-how only four or five people today have. The BingDing Wood Kiln reflects a deep respect for local context, masterfully displaying how to attract new eyes – and profit – to an industry that’s as much a part of the region as the land itself.

London designers Child Studio have completed work on Humble Pizza, a vegan restaurant with a plant-based perspective how to create tasteful interpretations of Italian pizza classics.

The interior is inspired by the post-war ‘Formica caffs’ of London’s West End, where establishments featured laminate surfaces, pastel colours and were mostly owned by Italian immigrant families. The result of this classic café update is a radiant spot where wall-to-wall pink Formica cladding continues across long counter fronts and tables tops. Cherry wood framing highlighting each lush laminate panel.

Mosaic tiled flooring, neon signs and classic mid-century lighting complete the evocative design that hides behind a characterful shopfront. The façade having been stripped back to reveal original features including ornate cast iron grilles. The Humble interior is accessorised with the classic mid-century lighting pieces by European designers Poul Henningsen, Jacques Biny and Luigi Massoni.

“We have long been attracted to the cinematic quality of London’s ‘Formica cafés,” explain Chieh Huang and Alexey Kostikov of Child Studio, “the duality of Modernist design language and the playful, almost cartoonish spirit.” In Humble Pizza, the duo have taken that design language, filtered it through a lens of contemporary culture.

On the Chilean coast, 3370 Studio has designed Guest House 8q. Located in Los Vilos and overlooking the South Pacific Ocean. The landscape and local wildlife make it a perfect place from which to contemplate the nature and beauty of Northern Chili.

More and more people seem to find their way towards Chili as a holiday destination. Harbor town Los Vilos is about 200km north of Santiago. The unique “Guest House” consists of three independent glazed volumes and a technical volume joined by a large ventilated roof. The separation of the volumes responds to the order designing a house with a form that could be opened and closed off depending on the desire of the guests.

Casa Zicatela, Mexico. At the top of a hill, looking across an agave plantation towards the mountains in the east, and to the celebrated surf-spot, Playa Zicatela, in the West.

Designed as a weekend escape. Drawing from the architecture of the Aztecs, lead architect Ludwig Godefroy has created a space that functions around outdoor living areas and gardens in a style unique to the ancient temples that populate so many coastal sites in Mexico.

Godefroy moved to Mexico in 2007 to work as an architect at Tatiana Bilbao’s studio, after a stint at OMA in Rotterdam. “What I like about working in Mexico is to be able to revisit such varied references without the weight of history,” says Godefroy. “I can combine pre-Hispanic influences with brutalism in an unvexed way.”

In 2014 Godefroy started working on Casa Zicatela, a beach house in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The house is modelled on a Mesoamerican ballcourt, with its central element flanked by large, symmetrical stepped walls. “In a way, the design was borne out of constraints,” says Godefroy in reference to the budget and the 280 sq m plot of land. “The more constraints you have, the more radical your choices will be.”

Made entirely of concrete (apart from the tropical- inspired wooden doors and shutters), the glassless three-bedroom house very much resembles a bunker from the outside. Inside, its strong and geometrical features create a powerful play of light and shadow, bringing life to the open living space, garden and swimming pool.

“The light in Oaxaca is glorious,” says Godefroy, who cites Carlo Scarpa and Louis Kahn as major influences. “You’re not restricted to living in one room, it’s all adjustable.” He points to the large shutters, which, once closed, create a physical divide between the otherwise unenclosed spaces.

The Native Hotel, Malibu. Perched below the Pacific Coast Highway and surrounded by the woodlands of the Malibu hills. Your reason to make Malibu the go-to spot for your next beach getaway. The mid-century line-up of interconnected bungalows was relaunched by Los Angeles creative agency Folklor as a boutique-style retreat that combines the laid-back vibe and stripped down modernism of the original design.

Located at Point Dume, 13 bungalow-style rooms all feature private decks with hammocks to let people unplug and fall asleep to the sound of frogs and the breeze coming off the ocean.

Unfortunately, due to the damages sustained from the devastating Woolsey fires, Native Hotel is temporarily closed. With the support of their community they are rebuilding the historic property to re-open pretty soon. In support of the tragical fires, I am sharing this magical place with you as the owners are looking forward to open the doors again.

The Native Hotel was built in 1947 as a cabin-meets-motel one-storey building and originally known in its heyday as the Malibu Riviera Motel. Its former logo faintly visible behind The Native’s refurbished roadside signage - provided an understated hideaway for celebrities like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Bob Dylan, the latter famously writing the album “Blood on the Tracks” while staying there.

Mexican born designer Melissa creates for M.A unique pieces, handmade alongside artisans who specialize in different ancestral processes. “I hope this project can be a bridge to the native communities of Mexico, helping to preserve craftsmanship and create both opportunity and income using fair and horizontal manufacturing practices.”

Laid-back nostalgia on Autstralia’s gold coast: Burleigh Pavilion. Where beachlife, architecture and interior design design reflect many of our daydreams. Call it a Miami Vice confectionary palette, laced with a heavy dose of beach subculture.

The catchy oceanfront pavilion dates back to 1987, located in the south area of Brisbane, famous for its long sandy beaches. Sydney-based architectural practice Alexander & CO was commissioned for the renovation of the local landmark.

UPGRADE breathes new life into forgotten architecture. This book by Gestalten presents a diverse range of progressive renovation projects from around the world – from home extensions to the modernization of industrial sites.

Adding. Extending. Transforming. Upgrade explores architectural and design concepts that seek to enhance and repurpose our surroundings. From slight changes to complete renovations, the spectrum of possibilities is vast. Extensions upon a rooftop. Factories turned into relaxing retreats. Wood additions contrast with antique brick exteriors.

One of the works showcased in the book is the E/C House on the volcanic Pico Island, designed by Portuguese architecture studio SAMI-Arquitectos. The two-storey holiday home, which overlooks the Atlantic, was built around the ruins of a former house. The old stone walls are left standing, creating a striking contrast between the old and the new. Minimally furnished, the home provides a tranquil space to relax and rejuvenate. “The house, modelled inside the walls of stone, was designed with generous openings, for light to come inside and to contemplation of the landscape,” say the architects. “These openings are sometimes lined up, and sometimes not, with the former openings of the ruin, creating new frames and relations with the original limits of the house.”

Settle down and connect with the landscape. House A in Alphington Australia is one of those suburban homes you can’t ignore when walking by. From the street it looks like a house with no windows. The dark, radially sawn timber cladding gives no real hints about what is going on inside. Some green leaves sprouting out the top of the house is the only hint of the surprise that awaits.

The Wes Anderson-inspired Breadway Bakery in Odessa pops by colour and texture, as bright as a bubblicious bubblegum. Let me help you finding your way to Ukraine’s hottest new commodity, created by interior designer Lera Brumina and architect Artem Trigubchak.

The 85 square meter space is divided into three visually distinctive and functioning sections. Mixing clashing tones and textures of perfect pastels. You’ll walk a deep-blue take-away zone, a pink  waiting zone and a light-grey zone  where you can stay for your bakery sweets and coffee.

The Breadway Bakery features high ceilings and large windows. To emphasize the amount of light it was used glossy tiles by Ceramica Bardelli, and to emphasize the height of ceilings, were designed custom-made chandeliers. Built-in furniture, tables, and sofas were also designed especially for this project.

“You can hear the waves, but what you see are trees, plants, and the Sierra Mountains in the distance. It’s about connecting to the outdoors.”

Casa Tiny, Mexico. The feet in the sand and the head in the trees, an exclusive and original stay through Airbnb. Inspired by Thoreau’s Walden, Casa Tiny is a minimalist hideaway constructed of concrete and parota wood. It shines with its small size, ideal in a place where the day is spent outdoors.

Located on the beach of Oaxaca, Mexico, the cottage contains just enough space to put the essentials: a soothing room immersed in nature, a kitchen with a huge central island that runs out, a bathroom dug in the concrete left bare. The concrete and wooden details blend perfect together. Construction costs came to approximately €40.000, including the pool, terraces, access road, and all the installations such as water, electric, sewage, cistern, and passive solar heaters for the water in the bathroom and kitchen.

Casa Tiny is located in sleepy Punta Altares, 30 minutes down the coast from the surf town of Puerto Escondido. The place to rent your car and stock up on the essential supplies.

Hands up for the magical furniture collection by the talented Hong Kong designers Lim + Lu. Their mass series,  a reconfigurable sofa,  day bed and a pull-out bed, features pastel tones originally designed to complement the couple its own colourful home.

The mass of the furniture pieces juxtaposes and grounds the lightness of the space. Upholstery in soft pastel colours rests on seemingly dense brass blocks, creating a playful contrast of the two materials.

The sofa, upholstered in Kvadrat fabric, consists of four upholstered blocks that can be reconfigured to make way for a side table either on the side or in-between the seats.

The furniture pieces are made of stainless steel in polished brass finish. Each piece is available in a variety of fabric options, made to order.

On the south coast of the island of Formentera, a sophisticated and thoughtful designed house blends into an oneiric view stands. Bosc d’en Pep Ferrer is a project by Marià Castelló Architecture, focused on the duality between the telluric and the tectonic. It balances in a gentle way between the earth and the air. To be seen as a  place where both the handcrafted and the technological find their nature.

Based in Formentera, Marià Castelló Architecture draws inspiration from the distinctive character and the serenity of the island to design architectural projects. Bosc d’en Pep Ferrer is no exception.

The Chiaozza Chapel, installed within Cooler Gallery, is an intimate space celebrating colour, light and form. Five painted wooden wall works fill the 6- by 7-foot gallery. The formal compositions reference natural and metaphysical concepts such as horizons, atmosphere, time, landscape, and ritual. Repetitive motifs such as grids, diagonals, and arcs augment the visual vibration of the room.

In Chiaozza’s work, color is a vessel for experience. Matte opaque pigment blurs the presence of the sculpture’s surface and its surroundings. Light bounces off the painted wooden planks, creating reflected chambers of color that animate the air around and within each piece.

Hidden in the rainforest of waiheke island, New Zealand. Architect Chris Tate created the A-frame Tent House as his own studio and retreat. Eventually the cabin turned into a holiday home where all of us can hide and blend with nature. The dark exterior makes you feel the same with its lush surroundings

The white colour scheme inside is an instant eye-catcher. Tent House has a single mezzanine bedroom and bathroom, and a fully glazed end with uninterrupted views out onto the nearby undeveloped wetlands. Its minimal interiors offset the surrounding dense vegetation, while upstairs the pitched roof and draped curtains give the sense of sleeping among the trees. A lack of walls and doors generates a compact but continuous space for living.

Morgane Sézalory, the founder of French clothing brand Sézane, lives in Paris in -without any understatement- a gorgeous apartment.

Sézalory is a self-taught women, who loves freedom and doesn’t like rules. She only moved to the apartment last summer and made her own interior story on creating the place as a home. One thing that keeps her going in the decoration are lamps. Which are like little jewels that can change a whole room. The ones in her living room are designs by Red edition and India Mahdavi. The lovely Pouf ottomans are by  Normann Copenhagen.

The geometric vacation shelter is energy-efficient and covered with locally sourced certified pinewood. Which turns from yellow to a beautiful gray as the years pass.

His Parisian home reveals a slightly softer side, a tactile feast for the senses mixing shapely, vintage pieces by Oscar Niemeyer and Ettore Sottsass with the more rigorous forms of Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé and Le Corbusier.

His ‘In Vein’ trestle table captivates aesthetically and formally and adds a layer of delicate beauty to my table wish list.

With its simple steel trestle bases, leather detailing and the Gris d’Ardenne marble top, Storms design got my attention. Caught by surprise, ‘In Vein’ has a dual function. Apart from being a table it can be turned over to reveal a decorative mirror straight up against your wall. A design that represents simplicity, mobility and efficiency.

Ricardo Bofill remains at the forefront of the urban design and architectural professions. In 1963 he created a place where the traditional is not conceived.  La Fábrica. Centralizing  his own team of sociologists, philosophers, mathematicians, painters and writers in a repurposed former cement factory in the Catalonion town of Sant Just Desvern.

“The house is a ruin that has been restructured and remade, where the spaces are useful for everything. The advantage of this labyrinth is that people don’t find each other and everyone can live as they want to. All set up with a very minimalistic approach, without the  appearance of obvious luxury. As luxury is in space, in a lifestyle.”

Bofill crosses aesthetic trends: a brutalist vision, with a romantic vision of useless structures that have been left for pure aesthetic composition. Creating an appropriate environment, for different moods. “Space is like sound, there are people who have it and people who don’t. People who go to a place, look up and understand the space, and people who just look at the floor and walk through it, who don’t have a spatial sensibility.”

Bofill’s aestetic feelings excite, the beauty of La Fabrica moves. It’s my reference of how one’s way of life can cross my narrow thoughts. A projection of one’s dreams and realisations, an influence for my mind.

Told to be fearless in the pursuit of my very own happiness, I left Belgium last month and discovered the goodness of being 48h in Oslo: the queen of Nordic cool.

Both an old and new capital, Oslo is a city in motion. Whether it is by the summer daylight or winter darkness, you will be embrased by the vibrant atmosphere and the cutting edge architecture. It is clean and colourful and filled with green spaces and excellent coffee bars. I’ve been strolling around the city for hours and hours. Walking the National Opera roof by night, admiring the National Gallery, the Museum of Natural History and knowing that both Edvard Münch as Henrik Ibsen have called it their home, made me absorb the gentle pace of time. I easily got lost on the quiet streets lined with beautiful houses.

I’ve felt very welcome at Federica’s superbe b&b Choose Happiness (what’s in a name) and of course I loved the many interior design shops everywhere around. The many charms and wonders of the city and its unique identity have touched my traveler soul!

WE Architecture is a young innovative architecture office based in Copenhagen, Denmark. They have set up the boat house as a private assignement, located  on the beach 20 metres from the water edge in the beautiful surroundings at Svallerup Strand, Denmark.

“Cedar wood has been used for the construction due to its ability to withstand the elements and its fantastic silver grey patina. Inside, the boat house is one open room with beams. Concrete is used for the floor with the possibility to cover it in sand, which makes it impossible to see where the building ends and the beach begins. The floor continues outside, which creates a terrace area to the west and south.”

Styling has been done by Lene Ronfeldt for  Louis Poulsen. A Danish kitchen interior where the goodness has been set through shades of dark grey, brown, green and black. Adding only but admiration for the neutral decoration details and the subtile lighting fixtures. Perfect styling!

Early Monday and still dark outside… but my day has started. And as I prefer a coffee and a good read over some exhausting morning runs, I need to share this beautiful ceramic jars by Ben Fiess with you.

They are the most incredible jars I’ve seen in years. The designs show off a colour palette that makes me only want to drink more coffee. Made out of a four-part construction that uses two cork plugs and a contrasting rubber band to close the jar.

Redesigning a house is about pushing your limits. Often with a strong desire to get rid of a mash of styles set up by the previous owners. The concrete Bellarine Peninsula house by Auhaus Architecture is the perfect example of reconstructing in style.

Both simple lines and strong concrete geometry set up a connection with the landscape and elongate the original 1930′s house in a clever & modern way. Australian architectural design that appeals to the eye!

The LLAMA clothes rack by Spanish designer André Simòn expresses everything I like in furniture design. An object that shows strong graphic lines and a simple expression. One that you can dress up or keep naked in the room and from which it’s function and easy construction are evident.

For those who know me, it will not be a surprise to see the LLAMA design on my blog. As I tend to have a desire for interior objects that bring together the solid birch and clear mint green lacquer.

This home has only 59m² on the counter. The high ceilings, natural light and the white walls give you the impression to be in an apartment twice its size. Contrast has been made with the black painted wooden beams and floors. They fit perfectly together. No need to say this renovation has been done really well.

Polished concrete floors, stale framed windows,… You’ve got to say, this cool industrial apartment has been softened up by the mix of raw materials, well choosen furniture, an impressive chandelier and Kate Moss framing one of the walls. A place to feel at home, to feel inspired and relax at the same time!

Amongst her decorating job for Chanel boutiques, she creates designs for rugs, runners, room dividers, blinds, panels, wall hangings and upholstery fabrics.

She knows how to implement the perfect dose of interior goodness and has set up a perfect dreamy Danish interior style for her own home. A creative place where working materials serve as decorative elements and where design classics blend well together with a subtile bohemian softness.

As I live in old farm house close to the city of Bruges, this project is one that makes me mesmerize only more of a unique renovation project. One where we are surrounded by the goodness of the greenery. And where we can relax in an interior styled with a Scandinavian touch, a white monochrome palette -with splahes of pastels- and being embrazed by large windows.

The first winterish cold is covering me… So time to dazzle about the most precious carpet I’ve seen in ages. This MYK-Berlin snow leopard carpet is manufactured completely by hand.

It is formed out of over 700 handmade pompons in leopard dessin, which are made from merino wool and merino wool mixture. Ground is 100% 5mm wool felt. Nose and muzzle are wool felted by hand. Total weight is 35 kg. This object is only made on order. Customer wishes on colour, size and dessin are possible as well.

It measures 150cm x 208cm length, hight at head is 25cm. Lead time is 13-14 weeks, so let the snow stay out till then. Limited edition only!

When it feels like autumn halfway August it’s time to shout out loud & give you all some more goodness for the eye… What about this great Copenhagen delight by Anne Sofie Kamphøvener and Aske Ebbesen.

Anne Sofie loves simple decoration and the use of primary colours. Red, blue and yellow accents blend well together with the minimalistic white and grey. I love the way how they have installed the many lamps with an eye for detail. At different heights, to create comfort and cosiness in their rooms. Or to highlight the small areas and make the rooms feel larger.

Once more I fell in love with Studio PS. The Dutch designers have designed the MOAK Clock, a table clock that stands out in its simplicity. A handcrafted object to make you aware of the goodness in life.

The exterior base and hands are made of concrete, while the circular dial is made of an unfinished wood oak veneer. And a bright orange twist to count your minutes! For sale in their shop… so time to go!

Swedish graphic designer Therese Sennerholt is a name to remember when you’re on the go to decorate your walls… She has brought a sublime collection of graphic prints together to be sold online.

My favourite? Urban Walk – a symbol to never stop walking in the direction of your dreams! And as for now, Therese has started the pre summer sale with a 30-40% discount on all grapic prints.

Weekend times are there to discover goodness in magazines & newspapers… yes! Last week I’ve found out that ‘my newspaper’ De Morgen created a webshop De Morgen & Zonen  where lovely design objects are for sale. Even the great Milk Table Lamp by NORM Architects for &Tradition is to be found there… and at our place!

Never heard about the cute table lamp? It stands out for its simplicity and evocative Scandinavian style, designed by Kasper Ronn and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen from Norm Architects. The lamp is made of a translucent milky glass dome and three small unfinished oak supports stick out like stools legs. Equipped with a G9 halogen bulb.

We’ve found the perfect mood lamp to read our papers in the morning!

Something we all would like to know… how to transform a former factory into a modern home? Fanny & Pascal François have rebuild an old waffle factory near Lille… They’ve created a place to live where industrial aesthetics are blending with a warm inviting interior.

The monolithic concrete floor and the old windows have remained. All the other remnants are being knocked out. The furniture has been choosen carefully, with an eye for the rustic interior soul and the old brick wall has been painted lovely in white. Nice to see how the whites and wooden details are in the mix with colourfull garlants & bright coloured details such as their styled collection of vases.

… let’s move!

Never been to Istanbul? But eager to know how interiors are styled there? Quite stunning if you have a look at the beautiful home interior of Sefer Caglar, one of the two founders of the Turkish design studio Autoban.

Caglar’s great apartment has been visited by the people of the French online magazine Milk Decoration. The place reflects a combination of contemporary style , modern design and classic materials. It used to be a simple corporate office 3 years ago, but the owners renovated it with lots of charm. Inspired by everything that can tell a story, they’ve created an apartment where space is the essence & the objects so damn personal! Nice.

As I was looking for a nice bin to store some of my home made food goodness … it reminded me to inform you all about the winning design for the “Pimp Our Print” competition by Brabantia!!

I was really honoured to be part of the international jury with Oh My Goodness. More than 2796 designs crossed my eyes and together with Brabantia we have choosen the handcrafted ‘Feathers’ design by Pauline Boogaards as a winner. Nice prints in soft colours and black& white and lovely to combine with other bins you allready have at home. A touch of scandinavian happiness and a perfect reflection to the flower design Brabantia has started with.

The ‘Pauline’ feathers design will be the new pattern for Brabantia’s global canister range and potentially an entire product range including bread bins, touch bins and pedal bins. Available in stores from April 2014, so definitely a present to keep in mind!

Hell’O Monsters! One groovy Belgian art collective I have discovered through my work as a tailor at Café Costume.

Monsters at work: Jerôme Meynen, François Dieltiens and Antoine Detaille. They have recently made some great & limited linings collaboration with Café Costume… but let’s say they’re thruly known for their unique graphic vocabulary. They left behind wall art, graffiti letters and spray paint in favour of paper, characters, ink drawings and paint, moving on to sculpture, installations and wall drawing.

Their individual styles allows them to create an imaginary universe occupied by hybrid characters such as monsters with multiple eyes, mutated animals,… The group’s creations – despite their colorful and happy look – are in fact caustic commentaries on the adult world, human nature and society.

Time to discover which monster you’ll like the best whilst choosing your unique Café Costume lining or at their “Deaf, Dumb and Blind” exposition at Alice Gallery, Brussels.

Belgian label Groovy Magnets created some fantastic magnetic wallpapers. A perfect alternative to the classic magnetboard we all know & where animals will keep a catchy eye on you! My latest goodness discovery through Puur Confituur.

Designers Lies Verheyen en Pieter Claessen sell their wallpapers online. Stylish magnetic chique, whether you choose the owl, bear, zebra, rabbit,… as your perfect moodboard! All of them are comprised of iron particles on a vinyl basis, which makes it receptive to magnets, that come along with your wallpaper purchase.Aboslutely adorable.

The perfect rug? Difficult to say… but for sure the true luxury can be found in those that are handmade. Just like the Gan Rugs. I absolutely adore the Mangas Collection by Patricia Urquiola. Where natural & strong colours are woven in perfect combinations.

All Gan Rugs are handmade in India with the Mangas collection as a turning point in the rug world. The collaboration with Urquiola reveals her many designer facets. She created a set of multifunctional modules and rugs being warm and perfect in every combination you try to arrange your space. Flexible furniture, which I have put on my wish list… just right now!

If you don’t know NLXL and you’re in the mood for some wall pimping, than really have a look at the quality designer NLXL wall papers.

NLXL was founded in the Netherlands in 2010 by Rick and Esther Vintage. The first collection of wallpapers was designed by the Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek and became an instant success. The ‘Scrapwood Wallpaper’ collection is sold in 56 countries.

In 2012 NLXL launched 2 new collections with the Parisian concept store Merci and Dutch Designer Piet Boon. These collections have been introduced at ICFF New York, Pulse Show London and Japantex Tokio.

Working becomes really fun with the wooden keyboards by Orée. The bluetooth equipped wireless keyboards are made from a single piece of premium maple and walnut. Result: elegant aesthetics to adore! Eco-designed, crafted and hand-finished in France.

Each unit is cut into three sheets to preserve the wood grain across the shell and separate keys to minimize waste. The keyboards are conceived as a universally compatible device & work with any tablet, smartphone or PC.

Orée keyboards are not the only goodness to discover. The design team also created a wooden trackpad and a wireless power pebble, which enables you to charge your smartphone just by placing it on the top.The wireless power sleeves -made out of wood and tanned leather- are designed to protect our phones and to charge them using the power pebbles.

For all the stationary lovers: DISCOVER Quill London!  An online boutique -by Lucy Edmonds- dedicated to stylish stationery and paper goodness.

From Christian Lacroix Papier, to the magnifying glass from Martin Margiela, classic pens from Kaweco, notebooks, journals, tissue paper pompoms, washi tape,… Quill has all the little paper details you can wish for.

Lucy is a stationery obsessive herself. She couldn’t find any place that really specialised in bringing it all together into one dedicated shop for the aesthetically minded and style-savvy. So she decided to create Quill London, a webshop with style! Thank you!

Grab yourself a chair, a tongue chair! As the Danish furniture brand Howe has relaunched one of Arne Jacobsen‘s classic designs from 1955!

Howe has replicated the original design and reproduced it using contemporary manufacturing techniques. The relaunched Tongue chair is available in several veneers or with fabric & leather upholstery and with chrome or powder-coated steel legs.

Jacobsen was one of the most famous designers and architects of the mid twentieth century. He designed the chair for the Munkegård School in his native Denmark, but it was not produced commercially until the late 1980′s and was withdrawn after just a few years. Tongue was the second chair designed by Jacobsen, shortly after his famous Ant chair, but it never achieved the same widespread distribution as many of his other furniture designs. It was used in the rooms of Jacobsen’s famous SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which a modified bar stool version was also produced.
